Board Split on Mask Requirement WILLIAMSTON – The Martin County Board of Education decided in a 4-2 vote students and staff will start the 2021-2022 school year with a mask requirement. The motion was made by Gail Cargile that effective August 3, for MCS to follow CDC and North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS) recommendations during the school day. Cargile’s motion included a decision on athletics would be made by Dr. David Fonseca, Superintendent; Clay Wagner, Director of Student Services and athletic directors in the school district. Barbara Council, Board Chair; Renee Purvis, Vice-Chair; Keisha Manson and Cargile voted in favor of the motion. Van Heath and Gene Scott voted against the motion after Heath’s motion for an optional mask requirement failed 2-4. Kenneth Harrell was absent from the meeting.

Thursday, March 11 is a remote learning day. No LIVE sessions but students will have assignments to complete via google classroom. Friday, March 12 is a teacher workday = NO SCHOOL for students. Monday, March 15 is an unscheduled day = NO SCHOOL for students. Enjoy your extended weekend!

RES will be raising money from March 8-26 to help support the American Heart Association. This event will be all virtual this year. All donations must be submitted online with the links you will be provided in the coming days. ONLINE ONLY for donations. No cash needs to be brought to school. The links and event information will be provided via our school's Facebook page, a flyer sent home, and each student will get a google classroom message from Mr. Swift next week. The directions, procedures, and all the prizes for the students will be on the provided link to the American Heart Association website for our school.

Good evening -- As students are set to return to back to school on Monday, Feb. 8 - please be mindful that we are still practicing the three W's (wear a mask, wash your hands, and wait (social distancing). Also, please be sure that you are filling out attestation forms daily for your child before boarding school buses or exiting vehicles. A new set of masks and attestation forms will be sent home with your child on Monday. Don't forget to show your school spirit by wearing your Rodgers School spirit shirt.
