RHS Science Teacher Named to 2023 Educators of Excellence Team
Travis Wester, a veteran science teacher at Riverside High School, was chosen as a 2023 Educator of Excellence by the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences.
One of ten chosen across the state, Wester participated in the program’s winter excursion - the Yellowstone Institute - January 11-17.
According to the NCMNS, the Educators of Excellence Institutes were created to “enable exemplary educators to experience the natural world in selected outstanding environments; increase the use of reflection and direct environmental experience in teaching and become inspired and recommitted to the teaching profession.”
The final goal of the program, “to become a part of a statewide network of exceptional educators for continued support and learning,” seemed to be Wester’s favorite part of the experience.
“The main purpose was to observe wildlife,” Wester explained. “Seeing all the stuff we saw was amazing, but the group experience was the best.”
Through the group process, Wester also became aware many of the challenges he faces as an educator are felt in all parts of the state. “
Educators studied and experienced the wonders of the world’s first national park and its incredible wildlife, including bears, bison, wolves, and elk. The geological wonders of the park also provided interesting educational features for the teachers.
Wester saw things in person, such as chemosynthesis in geothermal vents. Until this trip, his knowledge would have only come from textbooks.
“When I talk about it in the future, I can speak to it from first-hand experience,” he added.
Educators in the program experienced the magic of Yellowstone National Park in “its harshest and quietest season,” according to the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences.
Snowshoe hikes and sightings of creatures such as an ermine (short-tailed weasel) were just part of what made this trip an unforgettable experience. Participants were afforded time with experts such as U.S. Wolf Biologists and other team members who excelled in their fields. Add to that the sights such as the Thumper geyser and other wonders of the park.
“The most valuable thing to me,” said Wester, “was just stopping and enjoying what is there.”

Seniors need to show proof of receiving the NC mandated meningococcal booster vaccine prior to September 29th or they will no longer be able to attend school. Please bring a copy of your immunization record to the school nurse as soon as possible! Feel free to scan and email a copy if that is convenient for you. Please send to tspence@martin.k12.nc.us
Any senior that is interested in taking the SAT on November 5th must register before October 7th. There will be a registration drive in the media center computer lab with Ms. James on Monday, September 26 during all 4 periods for those that want help with online registration. You MUST sign up for a time slot on the google doc posted in the Senior Google Classroom before you come! There will be a Senior Parent Information Night on Tuesday, September 27th in the RHS Media Center @ 6pm. Parents & students are encouraged to come out to learn more about the steps to your child’s post-secondary plans, and also get an overview on the Residency Determination Service & the FAFSA. The FREE Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) opens on October 1st. Please complete this application as soon as you can! Institutions use the FAFSA to determine how much financial aid you’re eligible for. Student AND Parent/Guardian financial information is required to complete the FAFSA. The Residency Determination Service (RDS) must be completed in order to receive in-state tuition at all NC colleges and universities. If not completed, students will be billed with out-of-state tuition. FREE College Application Week is October 17th-21st. During this week, participating colleges (announced October 1st) will waive their application fee and you can apply for FREE! It is encouraged to apply to as many schools as you can and make sure to know your Common App and/or CFNC account login info before that week. Ms. James will be available to assist students with applications in the media center computer lab on Mon/Wed/Fri. There will be a signup sheet out soon to select a time/date to come.
The CACRAO College Fair will be held on October 19th in the media center from 8:30am-9:30am. College and university representatives from all over North Carolina will be there to share information about their schools with students. Juniors & Seniors, please come to school dressed appropriately (business casual) and come prepared with questions to ask the college reps.

This is an important message from the Martin County Schools CTE Department regarding the upcoming Career Accelerator Camp Sessions which are July 21st and 22nd.
If you requested transportation to and from camp, you should have received a call from camp organizers. If not please contact Kristy Christenberry at 792-8812 extension 4334.
Breakfast begins at 8:45 each morning and lunch will be served at noon each day. Students will be dismissed at 12:20 daily.
Camp is conducted at the Martin County Schools Innovation Campus which is located directly behind Bojangles.
We are looking forward to this first of it’s kind camp with our students.
